My personal theory is that a lot of people who think they are republicans are really libertarians (little \"ell\" libertarians, at least). And unfortunately while republicans tend to sound like libertarians on the campaign trail (at least as far as fiscal policy) they rarely vote that way. I enjoy looking at how Congressman Ron Paul of Texas (who is actually a libertarian) votes and compare that to how many of the so-called conservatives vote.
